Filing a New Zealand visitor visa online is now the standard route, because paper forms have effectively ended. From 1 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) says Visitor Visa applications must be made online. This guide explains what changed, who it affects, and what remote workers should check before they apply.
Information in this article is current as of 1 October 2026. We built it from INZ’s own visa pages and news notices, then cross-checked dates against independent news coverage. However, INZ updates its pages often, so confirm details on the official site before you pay any fee.

What Changed on 1 October 2026
However, the switch did not happen overnight. On 11 August 2026, INZ published a notice titled Important visitor visa application form changes. It said most visitor visa forms would close in the old online system and move to the enhanced Immigration Online platform.
The Transit Visa page now carries the same wording as the Visitor Visa page. In other words, both categories must go through enhanced Immigration Online from 1 October 2026. For standard applicants, older online forms and paper forms are no longer the route for these visas.
Paper also remains possible in rare cases. According to Wego and Business Standard, INZ will accept paper forms after 1 October 2026 only in exceptional circumstances. Therefore, contact INZ before you post anything by courier.
Key Dates in the New Zealand Visitor Visa Online Transition
The timeline ran in stages, so some travelers met the new system weeks ago. Here are the dates INZ has confirmed on its own pages.
| Date | What happened | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| 24 August 2026 | Group Visitor and Tour Escort visas moved to enhanced Immigration Online | INZ notice |
| 24 September 2026 | New applications for most visitor visas could no longer start in the old system | INZ notice |
| 1 October 2026 | Visitor and Transit Visa applications must be made online | Visitor Visa page |
| 7 October 2026 | Last day to submit old-form drafts for Group Visitor and Tour Escort visas | INZ notice |
| 8 October 2026 | Remaining drafts in the old system get deleted | INZ notice |
For example, if you started a draft in the old portal before 24 September, you still have a short window. However, INZ says the old forms close on 8 October and remaining drafts get deleted, so you must start again online.
Which Visas Moved and Which Did Not
In total, the August notice listed 19 visitor visa types closing in the old system, so the New Zealand visitor visa online move is broad. Besides the standard Visitor Visa, the list includes these categories:
- Business Visitor Visa and Academic Visitor Visa
- Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa
- Medical Treatment Visitor Visa and Guardian Visitor Visa
- Sports Events, Visiting Media, and Short-term Entertainment Act visitor visas
- Private Yacht or Plane and Crew joining a Ship or Plane visitor visas
Still, a few categories stay outside the new platform for now. INZ says Partner of a New Zealander and Child of a New Zealander visitor visas remain in the old system. Meanwhile, the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa will be paper only.
Business Standard also reported that the Temporary Retirement and Refugee Claimant visitor visas are not moving online. We could not find that detail on an INZ page, so treat it as reported, not confirmed. Also, check your specific visa page on the INZ site before you assume the change applies.
Already Applied? What Happens to Your File
If INZ already has your application, you generally do not need to do anything. Both Wego and Business Standard report that applications lodged before 1 October keep processing as normal. So there is no need to resubmit, while anyone starting a New Zealand visitor visa online today simply uses the new portal.
Similarly, INZ says people with submitted applications on old forms keep access to upload documents and respond to requests. As a result, the cutover mainly affects new applicants and unfinished drafts.
New Zealand Visitor Visa Online Fees and Processing Times
The online shift did not come with a published fee change. Still, the costs below matter for budgeting, because most visitors pay two separate charges.
| Item | Amount (as of 1 Oct 2026) | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor Visa application | From NZD 441 | INZ Visitor Visa page |
| Transit Visa application | From NZD 235 | INZ Transit Visa page |
| International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) | NZD 100 for most visitors | INZ fees page |
| Visitor Visa processing | 80% decided within 2 weeks | INZ Visitor Visa page |
| Transit Visa processing | 80% decided within 1 week | INZ Transit Visa page |
Keep in mind that “from” means the fee can vary by country and circumstances. Also, the processing figures are INZ’s published timeframes for most files, not a promise for yours. INZ notes that September to March is its busy season, so apply early if you plan a summer trip.
Can You Work Remotely on a New Zealand Visitor Visa?
Yes, within limits, and filing a New Zealand visitor visa online does not change them. INZ’s remote work guidance says visitor visas applied for on or after 27 January 2025 allow remote work for overseas employers or clients. So a freelancer with foreign clients can keep working during a trip.
However, the rules draw a clear line around New Zealand itself. You cannot work for a New Zealand employer or do work that requires you to be in New Zealand. You also cannot exchange work with a New Zealand business or person for goods or services, such as reviews for free stays.
Tax is a separate question from immigration. The same INZ page says non-residents may avoid New Zealand tax if foreign income is taxed elsewhere and the visit lasts under 92 days in 12 months, or up to 183 days under a tax treaty. For details, see Inland Revenue and our breakdown of the 275-day digital nomad tax rule.
Who Needs a Visitor Visa vs an NZeTA
Many travelers rarely touch the visa portal at all. Citizens of visa waiver countries can visit for less than 3 months without a visa. Instead, they need an NZeTA before travel, and UK citizens get up to 6 months.
In Southeast Asia, the split matters a lot. For example, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei appear on the visa waiver list. By contrast, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and India do not, so their citizens need a visitor visa.
Transit rules follow similar logic. You may need a Transit Visa to pass through Auckland unless your passport or existing visa exempts you. INZ also caps time in the transit area at 24 hours.
How Long Can You Stay?
First, visitor visa stays depend on the visa you receive. According to INZ, a multiple-entry visa allows up to 6 months in each 12-month period. Alternatively, a single-entry visa can allow up to 9 months within 18 months.
That said, the officer decides the final terms on your visa. You still need to show funds, onward travel, and a genuine intent to leave. So prepare bank statements and booking proof before you start the online form.
How to File a New Zealand Visitor Visa Online: Checklist
- Create or sign in to your account through INZ’s Immigration Online access page.
- Scan your passport bio page and recent bank statements as clear PDFs or images.
- Have a card ready for both the visa fee and the NZD 100 IVL.
- Finish any old-system draft before the old forms close on 8 October 2026, or restart it online.
- Save your eVisa approval and carry a copy when you fly.
Above all, be cautious with agents who still offer paper lodgement for standard visitor visas. If an agent insists on paper, ask which exceptional circumstance applies. Then confirm it with INZ directly.
Visa rules and fees can differ by nationality and personal situation. Therefore, check your case with Immigration New Zealand before you book flights. Then file your New Zealand visitor visa online early enough to absorb any request for more documents.

FAQ
Can I still submit a paper visitor visa application to New Zealand?
Generally, no. From 1 October 2026, INZ requires online filing for Visitor and Transit Visas. INZ reportedly takes paper in exceptional circumstances alone, so plan to lodge your New Zealand visitor visa online.
Does the online switch change the visitor visa fee?
INZ has not announced a fee change tied to this move. As of 1 October 2026, the Visitor Visa page lists a fee from NZD 441. Most visitors also pay the NZD 100 IVL.
Can I work for my overseas clients while visiting New Zealand?
Yes, if your visa was applied for on or after 27 January 2025. However, you cannot work for New Zealand employers or trade work with New Zealand businesses. Tax rules apply separately, so check them as well.
