How to Keep a Coinbase Account While Living Abroad in 2026

Can you keep a Coinbase account while living abroad as a US citizen, or will a move trigger restrictions? This guide explains what Coinbase’s own help pages say, as of September 2026, and where the gray areas sit. In short, travel alone rarely breaks an account, but changing your listed country can.

We based each rule below on Coinbase Help Center pages, IRS guidance and FinCEN notices. However, we found no published Coinbase time limit for US customers who travel, so parts of this topic depend on your own facts.

Why a Coinbase Account While Living Abroad Gets Tricky

Coinbase ties your product access to where you live. Its address help page says your address helps determine which products and services you can use. As a result, your listed address matters more than your current GPS location.

Many US nomads keep a US address on file, often a family home or a state-based mail service. That setup works for many people. Still, it also means you should keep that address, your ID and your tax records consistent.

What Happens If You Change Your Country

Coinbase lets you update your country of residence, but the process has conditions. According to its update-country page, you must use a desktop browser and bring your cash balance to zero. In addition, you need to close open orders and pending transfers first.

You may also need a new photo ID and a proof-of-address document. Coinbase warns that the change may affect your services and that some products may face limits in the new country. Therefore, check what your new country supports before you switch.

For many US citizens abroad, the practical choice is to keep a real US address on file. Use an address you actually have the right to use, and keep it aligned with your bank and tax filings.

Logging In From Restricted Countries

Location still matters in one case. Coinbase’s prohibited regions page says it blocks logins while you are in a sanctioned region. Once you log in from a non-prohibited region, Coinbase says access returns, sometimes after an identity check.

That said, Coinbase adds that it will close the account if it decides you live in a prohibited region. So a long stay in a sanctioned country carries far more risk than a normal Southeast Asia trip. For the current list, Coinbase points users to the US Treasury’s OFAC sanctions programs.

We could not find a Coinbase statement on VPN use. For that reason, treat a VPN as a privacy tool, not a way around location rules.

Two-Factor Codes Without a US SIM

A lost US phone number is a common cause of lockouts for travelers. Coinbase’s 2-step verification page calls SMS the default method and the least secure option. Instead, it supports security keys, passkeys, authenticator apps and push notifications.

Before you leave, add a passkey or hardware key and at least one backup method. If you still lose access, Coinbase explains a recovery route with ID checks on its change phone number page. For more on this problem, see our guide to getting US bank OTP codes abroad.

Tax Forms You Will Still Receive

Living abroad does not end US tax filing for citizens. The IRS page for citizens abroad explains that the same filing rules generally apply. Also, the IRS digital assets page treats crypto sales as taxable events.

Coinbase now sends Form 1099-DA to US customers. According to its 1099-DA page, the form started with the 2025 tax year and shows gross proceeds. Then, from 2026, the IRS Form 1099-DA instructions add cost basis for assets bought on or after January 1, 2026.

For staking rewards and similar income, Coinbase’s tax info page says it issues Form 1099-MISC once you earn at least $2,000. However, income below that line stays taxable even without a form.

The W-9 Deadline Nomads Should Not Miss

Coinbase asks US persons to certify a taxpayer ID on Form W-9. Its W-9 page says that starting January 1, 2027, unverified accounts face backup withholding. Currently, the rate stands at 24% of proceeds, and some states add their own percentage.

Your name and SSN must match SSA or IRS records. Therefore, fix any mismatch now, while you can still reach US agencies by mail or phone. Our guide to backup withholding for freelancers covers how the 24% rule works elsewhere.

FBAR and Form 8938

Coinbase, Inc. operates in the US, so a standard US Coinbase account generally does not count as a foreign account under FinCEN’s FBAR rules. By contrast, a foreign exchange account raises separate questions. In FinCEN Notice 2020-2, FinCEN said a foreign account holding only virtual currency is not reportable on the FBAR for now.

FinCEN also said it plans to change that rule. Meanwhile, the Form 8938 instructions do not clearly address crypto on foreign platforms. So if you hold funds on a non-US exchange, ask a cross-border tax professional.

Cards and Cashing Out

The Coinbase Card page limits the debit card to US residents, excluding Hawaii. Similarly, the Coinbase One Card requires US residence outside the territories, a paid Coinbase One membership and an age of 18 or older. As a result, a change to a foreign address may cost you both cards.

For cash-outs, Coinbase lists ACH, wire, instant cashout, debit card and PayPal on its US payment methods page. Also, ACH and wire transfers need a US bank account. Check the Coinbase fee disclosures before a large transfer, since fees can change.

A Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Confirm your address on file matches your bank and tax records.
  • Add a passkey or security key, plus a backup 2FA method.
  • Verify your W-9 before January 1, 2027.
  • Link a US bank account that works well from abroad.
  • Avoid long stays in sanctioned regions.
  • Save each 1099-DA and 1099-MISC for your tax preparer.

Rules can differ by state, country and personal situation. Therefore, confirm your case with Coinbase support, the IRS or a qualified tax advisor.
