Cambodia Digital Nomad Visa 2026: 3 Facts Before You Go

Search for a “Cambodia digital nomad visa” and you will find guides that talk about one as if it already exists. However, it does not, as of this writing. This piece separates what Cambodia’s government has actually proposed from what remote workers can legally use to stay long-term today. It relies on Cambodia’s own immigration rules and the most recent official statements, current as of mid-2026.

Cambodia’s visa landscape can shift with little notice. In addition, immigration outcomes can depend on your specific nationality and circumstances. Confirm current requirements directly with a Cambodian embassy or the General Department of Immigration before you plan a long stay around any detail below.

There Is No Dedicated Digital Nomad Visa in Cambodia Right Now

Cambodia has not launched a visa category built specifically for remote workers. Instead, there is active discussion about creating one. The European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) formally proposed a dedicated digital nomad visa category. It appeared in EuroCham’s recent White Book of policy recommendations to the government, according to reporting from Khmer Times. Cambodia’s Tourism Minister, Huot Hak, confirmed to reporters that the ministry is reviewing the recommendation. It fits a broader push to expand tourism and long-stay travel. However, a review is not a launch. The government has not published a timeline, application process, or eligibility criteria. So, any article describing a Cambodia digital nomad visa’s “requirements” in detail, as of this writing, is describing a program that does not yet exist.

This gap between media framing and legal reality matters, therefore. If a site presents a proposal as a confirmed program, double-check the claim against the Cambodian government’s own channels first. Do this before making travel or financial decisions around it.

What Remote Workers Actually Use Today: the Ordinary (E-Class) Visa

Most remote workers staying in Cambodia long-term use the Ordinary Visa instead. This is commonly called, for example, the E-class or Business visa. Cambodia’s official eVisa portal, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, confirms this. The E-class visa is available online and grants an initial 30-day stay. The tourist (T-class) visa permits just a single extension. The E-class visa, by contrast, can be extended repeatedly, and in practice indefinitely. That is why long-stay expats and remote workers generally choose it over a tourist visa.

The General Department of Immigration, headquartered in Phnom Penh, processes extensions. As a result, licensed visa agents elsewhere in the country can also handle them on your behalf. Reported extension costs vary by duration and type. A one-month extension runs roughly $50. A one-year EB (business) extension typically runs $250 to $290, depending on the agent and paperwork involved. Third-party service fees often layer on top of the government fee. These figures come from visa-agent guides, not a single official fee schedule. So, confirm the exact current price with the General Department of Immigration or a licensed agent before you budget for a specific extension.

It is worth being precise about what the E-class visa does and does not permit, because this is not a gray area. Under Prakas No. 366/23 from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, self-employed foreigners, including freelancers and digital nomads working for clients outside Cambodia, count as part of the foreign workforce. They must register and get a work permit through the Foreign Workforce Centralized Management System (FWCMS), the same system employers use for staff. This applies even though the nomad’s income comes from abroad, not from a Cambodian employer.

Enforcement has tightened since 2024. A first EB extension can sometimes go through without a work permit on file. However, subsequent 6-month or 12-month EB renewals are now routinely denied if the applicant cannot show a valid work permit. In other words, skipping the work permit does not just create legal ambiguity; it can directly block your ability to renew your visa later. Penalties for a self-employed foreigner working without one can run around KHR 50.4 million, roughly $12,600. Given this, nomads planning to stay in Cambodia for more than a few months should treat the FWCMS work permit as a real compliance step, not an optional formality, and should confirm current requirements with a Cambodia-based immigration lawyer.

How Cambodia’s Situation Compares to Its Neighbors

CountryDedicated remote-work visa?Practical long-stay option today
CambodiaNo; proposed by EuroCham, under government reviewOrdinary (E-class) visa, repeatedly extendable
ThailandYes, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)DTV for eligible remote workers; see our Thailand DTV guide
VietnamNo general nomad visa; narrow UĐ1/UĐ2 talent visas from July 202690-day multiple-entry e-visa
MalaysiaYes, the DE Rantau Nomad PassDE Rantau for qualifying applicants

As the table shows, Cambodia currently sits closer to Vietnam’s position than Thailand’s or Malaysia’s. In other words, no purpose-built remote-work visa exists yet. Long-stay visitors default to a general-purpose visa category instead of one designed around location-independent work.

Why a Cambodia Digital Nomad Visa Might Actually Happen

EuroCham’s case for the proposal rests on economic reasoning rather than tourism marketing. Long-term remote workers tend to spend more per visit than typical tourists. They pay for housing, coworking space, transport, and often international school fees for accompanying children. This spending supports local service industries beyond hotels and tour operators. In addition, Cambodia has recently shown willingness to test new entry policies. One example: a pilot visa-free entry scheme for Chinese citizens, running from 15 June to 15 October 2026. That pilot suggests the government is open to entry-policy experiments. It does not, however, guarantee the digital nomad visa proposal will follow the same path or timeline.

What to Do Before You Base Yourself in Cambodia

First, do not plan a long stay around a “Cambodia digital nomad visa” that has not launched. Instead, use the E-class visa as your actual legal pathway. Second, confirm current E-class extension fees and required documents with the General Department of Immigration or a licensed agent in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. Third-party guides often quote different numbers. Third, if you plan to stay more than a few months, budget time for the in-person extension process. Online renewal is not currently available for Cambodian visas. Finally, check back on official government channels periodically. If EuroCham’s proposal advances, expect the terms to appear through the Ministry of Tourism or the General Department of Immigration first, not through travel blogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cambodia have a digital nomad visa in 2026?

No. As of this writing, Cambodia has not launched a dedicated digital nomad visa. EuroCham has proposed one. Cambodia’s Tourism Minister has said the government is reviewing the idea. However, no program, eligibility rules, or launch date have been officially confirmed.

What visa should remote workers use to stay in Cambodia long-term?

Most long-stay remote workers use the Ordinary (E-class) visa, available through Cambodia’s official eVisa portal. As a result, the General Department of Immigration lets holders extend it repeatedly. This differs from the tourist (T-class) visa, which permits just a single extension before you must exit and re-enter the country.

Can I legally work remotely for a foreign employer on Cambodia’s E-class visa?

The E-class visa itself does not authorize employment. Under Prakas No. 366/23, self-employed foreigners and freelancers, including remote workers serving clients outside Cambodia, are expected to register through the FWCMS system and hold a work permit. Enforcement has increased since 2024: later EB visa renewals are commonly denied without one on file, and fines for noncompliance can run roughly $12,600. If your situation is not straightforward, consult a Cambodia-based immigration lawyer rather than relying on general guides, including this one.
