Wifi quality in Southeast Asia depends more on the building and the backup plan than on the country. This guide covers what we could confirm about regional speeds, how to test a connection before you commit, and where Starlink is and is not an option. We have not tested these connections ourselves. Everything below comes from the sources listed at the end.

What the Speed Rankings Show
Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index publishes median fixed broadband and mobile speeds by country every month. In the July 2026 index, as reported by VietnamNet, Vietnam ranked 7th globally for fixed broadband (median 307.11 Mbps) and 10th for mobile (median 205.58 Mbps). We could not confirm current ranks for Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia or the Philippines on an official page, so we do not rank them here. Check the Ookla index for the latest figures.
Country medians hide large gaps between buildings. A coworking space on a dedicated line and a guesthouse sharing one line can sit in the same street and perform very differently. Judge the building, not the country.
Test Before You Commit
Ask the host or coworking space for a recent speed test screenshot before booking a month-long stay. Run your own test in the first hour after you arrive. A “high-speed wifi” line in a listing says nothing about how many units share the router. Coworking spaces are usually the safer choice for video-heavy work, but confirm that a specific space is still open before you plan around it.
Build a Backup Plan
A local SIM or eSIM gives you a second connection if the fixed line fails. Keep it active as your default mobile data line and tether from your phone when the wifi drops. For short trips an eSIM installed before departure avoids the airport SIM-shop queue. Our eSIM comparison for Southeast Asia travel covers providers. We did not confirm per-gigabyte prices on official carrier pages, so check current plans before you buy.
Starlink Status by Country
Satellite internet is regulated country by country, and the rules are changing. What we found:
- Vietnam: the government approved a five-year controlled pilot that must conclude before 2031 (VietnamPlus). SpaceX’s Vietnam unit received telecom licences in February 2026 (Tuoi Tre). The Nation Thailand reports that commercial service began on 13 August 2026.
- Thailand: in November 2025 the Digital Economy and Society minister rejected Starlink’s proposal for a 100% foreign-owned entity (The Nation). As of August 2026 the government says it would accept a Thai-majority structure, and no final licence decision had been reported (The Nation).
- Indonesia: Komdigi officials said in August 2025 that Starlink is meant for fixed home use and threatened to revoke its permit if devices are sold or used for mobile roaming (Selular.id). Do not assume a roaming plan is legal there.
- Malaysia: Starlink was reported to have been granted a licence in July 2023 (DealStreetAsia). We did not confirm the licence type or whether roaming use is allowed.
- Philippines: news reports say the National Telecommunications Commission approved Starlink’s entry (Palawan Daily News). We did not confirm current terms on an official NTC page.
Starlink hardware costs more than a second SIM card, and a local SIM from a different carrier is the simpler backup for most short stays. Check Starlink’s own Roam page for availability in your destination before buying hardware.
Do Not Forget Power
Fast wifi does not help during a power cut. A power bank that can charge a laptop once is cheap insurance. If you rely on a coworking space as your fallback, ask whether it has generator backup.
Who This Matters For
- Plan carefully: anyone with regular video calls, live streams or large uploads.
- Plan carefully: anyone staying on a small island or in a rural area, where one shared line is a single point of failure.
- Less critical: async, email-heavy or writing work, where a short outage costs little.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Southeast Asian country has the best wifi for digital nomads?
In Ookla’s July 2026 index, Vietnam ranked 7th globally for fixed broadband, the highest figure we could confirm for the region. The building you work from still matters more than the country.
Can I use Starlink as a digital nomad in Southeast Asia?
It depends on the country and changes often. See the country list above. Thailand had not approved a fully foreign-owned Starlink as of August 2026, and Indonesia has said it is for fixed home use rather than roaming.
Should I rely on hotel or Airbnb wifi for work calls?
Not without a backup. Ask for a recent speed test, test it yourself on arrival, and keep a local SIM ready to tether.
